Update (Sept. 5, 2018): On Sept. 4, 2018 California became the first U.S. state to pass a bill banning the sale of animal-tested cosmetics within the state after 2020.
A Step Toward a Cruelty-Free Future
Schmidt’s Naturals announces support of the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act
The fight to eliminate animal testing is a global movement. For example, in 2013, the European Union banned the importation and sale of any new cosmetics or ingredients that have been tested on animals. But still, there is no law or regulatory framework requiring personal care and cosmetic products to be tested on animals for product safety in the United States. And as a company that makes plant-based, vegan, and cruelty-free personal care, Schmidt’s Naturals is committed to manufacturing products without harming any animals and we do not purchase ingredients from suppliers that test their products on animals as well. Our customers and our planet come first.
That’s why we support SB 1249, the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act which prohibits the sale of animal-tested cosmetics in the state. It’s just one state and one step forward for now, but an important action that we believe in as we work together towards a cruelty-free future. Read our CEO and Co-Founder Michael Cammarata’s message of our company’s support below for SB 1249. If you’re in California, we encourage you to contact your Senator to vote YES to SB 1249. ContactingCongress.org (Opens in a new window) is a great resource to find who exactly represents you and the best ways to reach them.
Together, we can prioritize modern technology and non-animal reliant approaches for testing product safety, improving our health and our environment, and eliminating animal testing.

Dear Chair Jackson:
I am writing to communicate support for SB 1249, the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act. Schmidt’s Naturals is a company that makes plant-based, vegan, and cruelty-free personal care products.
In the United States, there is no law or regulatory framework requiring these products to be tested on animals for product safety. While some countries, such as China, require animal testing for cosmetics and other products, many companies like ours choose not to sell our products in those countries, or pursue other strategies for avoiding animal testing requirements. Our company is committed to manufacturing products without harming any animals and we do not purchase ingredients from suppliers that test their products on animals.
Today, modern tests for product safety that better predict human reactions are widely available, and more than 30 countries around the world now require their use. These non-animal approaches include engineered 3‑D human skin tissues or other types of cells and sophisticated computer models. These methods are often cheaper or faster than animal tests as well. And of course they are more humane. These tests ensure the safety of cosmetics and their ingredients without animals, and many have been approved by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development as official Test Guidelines. In addition, companies can utilize the hundreds of thousands of ingredients for which safety data is already available.
We know that it is possible to invent, manufacture and bring to the market an entire range of products without any involvement in animal testing. The European Union ended importation and sale of any new cosmetics or ingredients that have been tested on animals in 2013. Other countries have enacted similar restrictions since then. It is time that California adopt a similar regulatory framework.
Modern non-animal tests for cosmetics safety are accurate, efficient, and affordable. We proudly support the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, SB 1249, prohibiting the sale of animal-tested cosmetics in the state.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Michael Cammarata
CEO + Co-Founder of Schmidt’s Naturals
