Hi everyone! My name is Dr. Whitney Bowe, and I am a New York-based board-certified dermatologist and a proud Schmidt’s partner. My 360-degree approach to optimizing skin health is grounded in the science of our gut-brain-skin connection and therefore incorporates nutrition, lifestyle, and of course, skincare.

When it comes to skincare, I am passionate about using and recommending products from brands that prioritize transparency and efficacy in formulating their products, which is one of the reasons I chose to work with Schmidt’s.

Many of my patients come to me looking to transition from a traditional antiperspirant to a natural deodorant, and often find the products they’re using don’t work, or leave them with irritation. I started my transition a few years back and had this same experience — until I found Schmidt’s.

One of the things I really respect about this brand is their commitment to work with their customer base to help find the right product for each person – one that works with your body chemistry. I also really appreciate that they are performance driven. It can be very challenging to find natural products that not only keep you fresh but are long-lasting and effective.

Since there are so many questions on the topic of Schmidt’s natural deodorant, I wanted to answer some of the most frequently asked and offer tips for finding the best product for you.

How is body odor created?

Many people don’t realize that human sweat is odorless. It’s when the bacteria under our arms combines with sweat that body odor is created.

What ingredients make Schmidt’s natural deodorants work?

Baking soda and magnesium are two naturally powerful odor neutralizing ingredients. When they are paired together — like in Schmidt’s upgraded signature formula — they offer effective odor protection. This formula offers odor protection for up to 24 hours.

It is important to note that different people’s skin reacts differently to different ingredients. For example, some people are sensitive to baking soda, and that’s ok too! It doesn’t mean you can’t use a natural deodorant. If you are sensitive to baking soda, Schmidt’s has a sensitive skin line that is baking soda-free but still controls body odor with magnesium.

What ingredients do you recommend your patients look for in natural deodorants?

I recommend nourishing ingredients to my patients like vitamin E, jojoba oil and coconut oil — all of which are in Schmidt’s upgraded signature formula. You can really feel those nourishing ingredients working when you glide the product over your skin.

How do I apply Schmidt’s natural deodorant?

Natural deodorant application is important! The process is different than a traditional deodorant.

  • Ensure underarm skin is clean and dry.
  • If you shave your underarms, take some time to let them breathe before you apply your deodorant.
  • Hold product to skin for 5 seconds to soften on contact with body heat. This step is important!
  • Gently apply a thin, even layer to underarms. 1 — 2 swipes will do the trick.

Start small, and use less than you might be used to with conventional products.

How do Schmidt’s deodorants get their fragrance?

Schmidt’s uses a blend of essential oils and plant isolates to create their signature scents. While fragrance is a very complex topic and skin sensitivities and allergies must be considered, many people really want to incorporate some scent into their body care routine. I always recommend doing a patch test before using a new product, especially if it contains a fragrance. Simply scrape a bit of deodorant, place on your forearm, then cover with a bandaid. If your skin looks and feels normal after 48 hours, that’s a good indicator you can tolerate that particular product. However, allergies to ingredients in skincare can develop over time, so that is very important to note and listening to your skin and your body is always critical to your health.

My favorite Schmidt’s scent is Rose + Vanilla! I love it.

What is the microbiome and how can my deodorant impact it?

The microbiome is comprised of diverse bacteria that live in and on the skin. This bacteria is good for us! If the skin’s microbiome is disrupted by abrasive skincare products, this discontent can result in breakouts, rosacea flares, psoriasis, eczema, and even sensitive skin.

By changing the type of products we use under our arms, we can actually change the microbiome in that area, thereby changing our own body odor. So be sure to keep those bacteria happy and healthy by nourishing them with high quality products like Schmidt’s!
